近代法国在亚洲传播天主教 ,弘扬基督教文明 ,是其对远东进行殖民扩张的重要精神动因。越南是中国近邻 ,传统上受儒学浸染至深。明命统治时期更是全面推行中国模式 ,竭力以儒家思想来维护正统的封建统治。天主教的传入与越南现存的社会秩序和传统文化格格不入 ,明命禁教很大程度上是西方基督教文明和东方儒学文化激烈冲突的结果。另一方面 ,传教士和教民不断卷入当时越南国内的叛乱事件 ,危及阮朝中央政权的巩固 ,是明命严厉禁教的直接原因。明命禁教对越南近代历史产生了深刻的影响。首先 ,明命由对天主教的强烈反感而走上极端 ,驱逐、惩罚甚而大肆杀戮西方传教士和教民 ,到严禁洋人入越 ,最后导致闭港政策的推行 ,对越南的社会、政治、经济发展具有很大的消极影响。其次 ,明命的禁教政策对法国在远东的殖民扩张利益是一个沉重的打击 ,造成越法关系日趋紧张 ,并最终成为法国侵略越南的借口

French priests’ action of preaching catholicism , and expanding the effects of chrisianity became the important incentive to colonize Far East Asia.Viet Nam is a neighbour of china ,traditionally affected greatly by confucianism. In the ruling period of Minh Mang Dynesty,Viet Nam carried out the chinese model fully trying to make use of confucianism to keep her orthodoxy of feudalism .But the introdaction of catholicism conflicts with the existing social order and tradional culture ,so the banning religion policy of Minh Mang emperor is the result of the conflict between christianity and confucianism .On the other hand, French priests and disciples were usually involved in the rebellions of Viet Nam, and threatened the Ngugen central government , so the emperor Minh Mang took severe measures to ban the christianity.Minh Mang’s policy of banning religion affected the history of contemporary Viet Nam greatly . First, Minh Mang was so disgusted to the extreme with the christanity that he deported, punished and even slanghtered western priests and disciples, then closed harbours. Second, the Minh Mang’s policy of banning religion at benefies of French expansion made Viet-France relationship tense , and eventually became an excuse of Freach to invade Viet Nam.
